What Is Lower Blepharoplasty?

Lower blepharoplasty, also known as lower eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that rejuvenates the area beneath the eyes. Over time, factors like aging, genetics, and sun exposure can cause under-eye bags, puffiness, and loose skin. During a lower blepharoplasty, Dr. Ginsburg removes or repositions fat, tightens skin, and adjusts muscle to reduce shadows and restore a youthful contour. The result is a refreshed, well-rested appearance that enhances your natural facial harmony without altering your unique expression.

Am I a Good Candidate for Lower Blepharoplasty?

You may be a good candidate for lower blepharoplasty if you’re bothered by puffiness, under-eye bags, or sagging skin that makes you look tired even when you feel rested. The ideal candidates are generally healthy adults who want to rejuvenate their appearance without dramatically changing their facial features. Dr. Ginsburg will evaluate your skin tone, anatomy, and medical history to ensure the procedure is safe and suited to your goals.

You may be a good candidate if:

  • You have puffy or baggy lower eyelids caused by fat deposits or loose skin

  • You notice dark circles or hollowing under the eyes that affect your confidence

  • You’re in good general health and free of conditions that impair healing (such as uncontrolled diabetes or bleeding disorders)

  • You do not smoke, or you’re willing to stop before and after surgery

  • You have realistic expectations and a positive outlook about your results

How is Lower Blepharoplasty Performed?

During lower blepharoplasty, Dr. Ginsburg uses precise microsurgical techniques to correct puffiness, bags, and loose skin beneath your eyes. You’ll receive either local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia to ensure complete comfort. Dr. Ginsburg makes a small incision either just below your lower eyelashes (a subciliary incision) or inside the eyelid (a transconjunctival incision), depending on your anatomy and goals.

Through this incision, he carefully removes or repositions herniated fat that causes under-eye bags, tightens the supporting muscles, and gently trims any excess skin. The incisions are then closed with very fine sutures that heal nearly invisibly. The procedure typically takes one to two hours, and most patients are able to return home on the same day. By restoring a smoother transition from the lower eyelid to the cheek, Dr. Ginsburg achieves a refreshed, naturally youthful look without changing your overall facial expression.

How Long is The Recovery After Lower Blepharoplasty?

Recovery from lower blepharoplasty is generally straightforward, though every patient heals differently. You can expect mild swelling, bruising, or tightness around the eyes for the first one to two weeks. Most people feel comfortable returning to light activities within a few days and to work within 10 to 14 days. Stitches are typically removed (if external) within five to seven days. You should avoid strenuous exercise, bending, and heavy lifting for about two to three weeks to allow the delicate tissues to heal properly.
