“Brotox” – Botox® for Men is Increasingly Popular

Yes, it’s true, Botox® is not a procedure exclusive to women. Although the facial features of men and women age differently, the benefits of Botox® don’t discriminate. Providence Facial Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery and plastic surgery centers throughout the country have noticed an increase in men requesting Botox® procedures.

Cosmetic Enhancement is for Men

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reported that in 2011 more than 264,000 male patients received some sort of facial procedure (and that number is always growing). Popular cosmetic procedure for men include:

In addition, experts have noticed that men often prefer (and are more comfortable seeking) subtle types of treatments over radical procedures. Botox® is a very mild treatment. The drug inside the injection is a paralytic used to stabilize the muscles of the face and keep them from causing wrinkles. A numbing cream is applied prior to the procedure, even though it is typically painless.

The appointment for your Botox® treatment will last about one hour, and you can return to your normal daily activities immediately – no down time!

Providence Facial Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery Offers Botox® for Men

Our office of licensed medical professionals typically recommends Botox® treatments for the forehead, space between the eyes, crow’s feet, lip lines, and certain areas of the neck. Dr. Mark Ginsburg is a triple board-certified plastic surgeon, which means he is a licensed expert in his field.

We encourage you to schedule a consultation with our office to learn more about how Botox® or other treatments might help to enhance your face.

Seven Ways to Protect Yourself from the Sun

man applying sunscreen to his arm

It is increasingly common knowledge that the sun is damaging to the skin and that sun damage can speed up the aging process. Our office has come up with a list of seven ways to help protect your skin from the bright rays of the sun.

#1 Sunscreen

The most obvious way to protect yourself from the sun is, of course, putting on sunscreen. But with so many types with so many varying levels of SPF, just what is the best to use? The product our office recommends is the Obagi® Sun Shield which has an SPF level of 50. It is a non-greasy, fragrance-free cream that will keep your skin hydrated and healthy while also protecting it from damaging UVB and UVA rays during your time in the sun.

#2 Proper Application

It’s not uncommon to see people rubbing their sunscreen on at the beach, but it’s important to know that it won’t start working until about 30 minutes later. We recommend applying Obagi® Sun Shield prior to going out in the sun so that your skin has time to absorb it and really let those protective factors kick in.

#3 Wear Protective Clothing

Protective clothing not only gives you the chance to show off your sense of style, but great hats, bathing suit cover ups, and sunglasses help protect your skin from damaging rays.

#4 Don’t Be Afraid to Reapply, Reapply, Reapply!

When it comes to your sunscreen, you should never be afraid of putting more on. Depending on how long you are in the sun, you should make sure you are keeping up with how much sweat and water you are putting on your skin, as these elements can contribute to wearing down your sunscreen faster, making it less effective.

#5 Be Generous

Applying an ounce of your Obagi® Sun Shield is enough to properly cover your upper body. However, if you need more than an ounce to coat your skin, take what you need. It is always better to apply more, just in case.

#6 Avoid Tanning Beds

Nothing is more damaging than the unnatural lights given off in a tanning bed. If you do want to tan, then the actual sun is your best option. However, you still need to apply sunscreen. Yes, it’s possible to get a tan despite wearing sun protection.

#7 Mind the Time

The sun’s strongest rays shine down between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., which means during this time you shouldn’t be afraid of seeking out shade, when possible.

If you would like to schedule an appointment to have any sun damage examined, or have the full line of Obagi® Skin Care Products prescribed to you, contact our offices today.

Face Age Spots: Causes & Removal Treatment

Sometimes it seems like signs of aging are inevitable, that eventually everyone around us will look and feel the number on their birthday cake. Luckily for us, that is just not the case. While there are those of us that believe caring about your looks can be superficial, the truth is that a part of feeling good about yourself is feeling good about your appearance.

Age spots are one of the first ways your face changes as you age. You can diminish the appearance of age spots with the proper care; sometimes you can delay or avoid age spots altogether.

Avoiding Age Spots

There are a few good ways to avoid age spots, even if you are hereditarily predisposed to them. We suggest that you refrain from smoking. Becoming a non-smoker is a great way to prevent scaly, red spots, dark spots, and other facial blemishes. Dropping the smoking habit will not only lead to a healthier lifestyle overall – as smoking is the cause of many great health issues – but it will keep your skin looking younger for longer.

In addition, avoiding excessive sun exposure will also help keep your skin healthy. Sun damage has proven to lead to skin cancer. The heat from the sun warps the DNA inside of your skin cells, making it mutate and die. Limiting your exposure to sunshine – or using protection when you are in the sun – can help ensure the cells of your skin last longer and stay healthier.

Treating Age Spots

You may already have some age spots that need taking care of, and that’s okay! Some of the most renowned dermatological procedures have been created with this in mind. One of the most popular is ablative CO2 laser and fractional CO2 laser treatments, which use a specific type of light to break up the pigmentation on the skin and help resurface new cells. It is a relatively short procedure with a quick recovery time, and you should see results within a week.

If you’re looking for something even faster, then a chemical peel may be the treatment for you. While age spots aren’t necessarily cancerous, this type of procedure can be used for removing pre-cancerous facial growths. It will help rid of age spots, improve the texture of your skin, and give you a more youthful appearance.

Last, but certainly not least, our office provides a procedure known as dermabrasion. Dr. Mark Ginsburg will help you determine whether dermabrasion or a chemical peel is better for your skin. In less than an hour, this procedure will remove the skin to minimize scarring, wrinkles, and age spots.

If you would like to schedule a consultation with one of our offices, contact us today to schedule a consultation so our expert staff can recommend one of these effective facial procedures for treating age spots.

Five Reasons Why You Should Only Seek a Board-Certified Surgeon

One of the most common misgivings about facial procedures is the concern about them turning out unfavorably. Whether it is a facelift or rhinoplasty, it is so important to seek out a surgeon that is board-certified. A board-certified surgeon reduces risk and undergoes a significant amount of training and education in addition to what is required to attain their degrees.

Board certified surgeons are considered experts in their field, so when making your decision about who to trust with facial surgery, ensuring he or she is board-certified should be at the top of your checklist.

#1 Board-Certified Surgeons Reduce Risk

Offices of doctors that are board-certified take special care to make sure everything is as safe as possible. Spaces are cleaner, techniques are smoother, and every possible precaution is taken to make sure the patient is both healthy and safe throughout the duration of their stay.

#2 Board-Certified Surgeons Provide Enhanced Results

Board-certified doctors strive for the best possible results, and their extensive training prepares them to deliver the look you desire. As a triple board-certified surgeon, it is Dr. Mark Ginsburg’s job to ensure that he uses everything within his span of knowledge and training to ensure his patients receive the best possible preparation and post-procedure care.

#3 Board-Certified Surgeons Run Reliable Offices

Not only are the doctors more reliable, but their offices are too. Board-certification means the doctor excels in every area of their practice, including office management. Our offices strive to keep the patient relaxed and comfortable from the moment they walk through the door.

#4 Board-Certified Surgeons Adhere to High Ethical Standards

Board-certified doctors need to keep their ethical standing safe, and that means they are liable for any misfortune that may come to a patient during a procedure. Board-certification serves as a warranty for you should anything go wrong, the likeliness of which is drastically reduced by their qualifications.

#5 Board-Certified Surgeons Undergo Extensive Experience & Training

The requirements for becoming board-certified include 16 years of college level education and training, which includes internships and residencies. During which several examinations must be passed prior to even applying for a certification. To keep their certification doctors are required to maintain education requirements.

Patients of Providence Facial Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery will be happy to find that our offices are not only welcoming and happy to have you but that Dr. Ginsburg is triple board-certified in facial plastic surgery by The American Osteopathic Board of Otolaryngology and the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. His experience in his field is quite prestigious after having graduated in the top 10 percent of his class and receiving the Patrick Murray Award during his residency for being one of the top three scorers in the residency in-service exam. Top Three Facial Procedures for Men

Facial surgery for men is becoming increasingly popular. Our office wants to be sure that our clients not only understand the safety of these anti-aging procedures but that they feel comfortable speaking to our staff about how these facial cosmetic procedures can help improve their life.

#1 Eyelid Rejuvenation (Blepharoplasty)

Medically referred to as blepharoplasty, eyelid rejuvenation is one of the most popular facial procedures among men today. Blepharoplasty can be used to help get rid of excess skin or fat around the eyes or smooth out signs of aging. Scars or incision marks are hidden behind the skin and will not be visible post-surgery. Eyelid surgery can be performed as an outpatient procedure, and patients report very low levels of pain or discomfort afterward.

#2 Neck Lifts

While also very popular amongst women, this procedure (otherwise known as a lower rhytidectomy) has significant cosmetic benefits, as well as medical benefits. Typically used to correct what is commonly referred to as “turkey neck,” or “double chin,” this sagging skin can damage jaw muscles by weakening them. By removing it, we are not only tightening the neck of your skin for a more youthful and healthier appearance, but we are helping the jaw muscles to strengthen and regain their definition.

#3 Nose Surgery

Nose surgery (rhinoplasty) is probably one of the first types of procedures that come to mind when people discuss plastic surgery. Like neck lifts, this procedure can be used for medical purposes just as much as it can be used for cosmetic purposes. If you have a broken nose, difficulties breathing, or if you’re in need of nostril repair, all of this can be done with the nose surgery offered by our office. Scarring is limited to the inside of the nose, so there won’t be anything visible post-surgery and this procedure only requires a few weeks of recovery time.

If you have any more questions about the procedures listed, or what else our offices offer, contact us today.

Five Tips for Managing Dry Skin

Providence Facial Plastic Surgery#1 Always Get Your Skin Care Products from a Licensed Medical Professional

Now, this might seem a bit excessive, after all, there are plenty of products on the shelves of your local grocery store that promise to smooth your skin in no time. As great as that may sound, medical professionals are trained to match the best possible product to your unique skin type. Our offices provide Obagi® Skin Care Products that can’t be found in your local market and are prescription strength.

#2 Use Cream Instead of a Lotion

Lotions tend to be too thick for the skin to actually absorb and like most other products on the market are made with chemicals that can sometimes do more harm than good to your face. The creams and ointments of the Obagi® Skin Care Product line provide are designed to be easily absorbed by the skin by cleaning out clogged pores and helping to peel away dead skin. Skin hydration has never felt better!

#3 Be Careful of How Much Hot Water You Expose Your Skin Too

In a world where steam is advertised as healthy for the skin, this message can come off as a bit misleading. There is a certain amount of heat that is good for the skin, but if it is too high and on for too long, this can become dangerous for your face. The saying “too much of a good thing” heavily applies here. It’s better to take warmer showers rather than hot showers that only last for about ten minutes.

#4 Apply Your Skin Care Products Immediately After Washing

Anyone who has used dermatological products before should be familiar with the saying “apply to clean skin” that is usually labeled on the back of bottles. The same method applies to Obagi® products. For the best possible results, you should apply your Obagi® cream or ointment to your skin after a nice warm shower when the pores are most open, and the skin can absorb the product most easily.

#5 Always Wear Lip Balm

Not only is it good for your lips, but it is also good for the skin around your lips. When your lips are chapped, they dry out the area around them as well, making you more susceptible to marionette lines and wrinkles in the future.

If you are in need of any more tips about Obagi® products and skin care, contact our offices today.

Forehead Creases Treatment Using BOTOX® Cosmetic Compared to Brow Lift

Patients can appear haggard or worn down when the skin on their faces begins to sag and forms wrinkles and creases. Dr. Mark Ginsburg provides cosmetic treatments that can transform a tired appearance into a refreshed one. Many patients come for treatment because they are tired of looking older than they actually feel. Looking older can negatively impact one’s life in a number of areas, from work to social life. A cosmetic procedure can restore a more youthful appearance, as well as one’s self-esteem.

A brow lift is a common procedure because the forehead is usually the first area to show visible signs of aging. A brow lift can be used to raise the brow line and smooth skin in the area. Although this treatment is popular, treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic is just as popular. This treatment is very effective in softening and eliminating fine lines and wrinkles, leading to a younger appearance. Dr. Ginsburg is available for consultation to help you understand the benefits of BOTOX® Cosmetic versus a brow lift.

BOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX® Cosmetic is quite popular with patients, probably because it is so accessible. This non-surgical procedure is considered to be very safe and affordable for almost any patient. BOTOX® Cosmetic involves an injection that will temporarily paralyze certain facial muscles that create creases and wrinkles. BOTOX® Cosmetic basically disables certain facial muscles so that your skin appears relaxed and smooth. This treatment works on the upper facial features and leads to a noticeable improvement in the appearance of the forehead and eye region. This leads to a younger and more refreshed appearance for the patient.

One minor drawback of the procedure is the fact that it is temporary. Although treatment results are significant, they only last from four to six months. At this time, treatment should be repeated if the patient expects to maintain the benefits of the treatment. Patients should also be aware that BOTOX® does not address loose skin — only wrinkles, lines, and creases.

Brow Lifts

The most significant benefit of brow lift surgery is that it offers long-lasting results to the patient. Brow lifts eliminate wrinkles and lines, leading to a more youthful appearance for the face. It not only helps with wrinkles, but also raises the brow line and does away with loose facial skin. Patients who have significant signs of aging because of a low brow may find a brow lift better suited and more effective than BOTOX® Cosmetic. The main negative of a brow lift is that it costs more and is more invasive. Although any surgical procedure involves risk, we reduce that risk by performing an endoscopic brow lift. This procedure is less risky because it only involves small incisions that heal more quickly, reducing recovery time.

If you are dealing with noticeable signs of aging, you should consider cosmetic treatment. Dr. Mark Ginsburg provides safe and effective treatment in a caring and professional setting. If you want more information on BOTOX® Cosmetic or other cosmetic procedures, make an appointment with us right away. We eagerly await hearing from you!
