Face Age Spots: Causes & Removal Treatment

Sometimes it seems like signs of aging are inevitable, that eventually everyone around us will look and feel the number on their birthday cake. Luckily for us, that is just not the case. While there are those of us that believe caring about your looks can be superficial, the truth is that a part of feeling good about yourself is feeling good about your appearance.

Age spots are one of the first ways your face changes as you age. You can diminish the appearance of age spots with the proper care; sometimes you can delay or avoid age spots altogether.

Avoiding Age Spots

There are a few good ways to avoid age spots, even if you are hereditarily predisposed to them. We suggest that you refrain from smoking. Becoming a non-smoker is a great way to prevent scaly, red spots, dark spots, and other facial blemishes. Dropping the smoking habit will not only lead to a healthier lifestyle overall – as smoking is the cause of many great health issues – but it will keep your skin looking younger for longer.

In addition, avoiding excessive sun exposure will also help keep your skin healthy. Sun damage has proven to lead to skin cancer. The heat from the sun warps the DNA inside of your skin cells, making it mutate and die. Limiting your exposure to sunshine – or using protection when you are in the sun – can help ensure the cells of your skin last longer and stay healthier.

Treating Age Spots

You may already have some age spots that need taking care of, and that’s okay! Some of the most renowned dermatological procedures have been created with this in mind. One of the most popular is ablative CO2 laser and fractional CO2 laser treatments, which use a specific type of light to break up the pigmentation on the skin and help resurface new cells. It is a relatively short procedure with a quick recovery time, and you should see results within a week.

If you’re looking for something even faster, then a chemical peel may be the treatment for you. While age spots aren’t necessarily cancerous, this type of procedure can be used for removing pre-cancerous facial growths. It will help rid of age spots, improve the texture of your skin, and give you a more youthful appearance.

Last, but certainly not least, our office provides a procedure known as dermabrasion. Dr. Mark Ginsburg will help you determine whether dermabrasion or a chemical peel is better for your skin. In less than an hour, this procedure will remove the skin to minimize scarring, wrinkles, and age spots.

If you would like to schedule a consultation with one of our offices, contact us today to schedule a consultation so our expert staff can recommend one of these effective facial procedures for treating age spots.

Five Reasons Why You Should Only Seek a Board-Certified Surgeon

One of the most common misgivings about facial procedures is the concern about them turning out unfavorably. Whether it is a facelift or rhinoplasty, it is so important to seek out a surgeon that is board-certified. A board-certified surgeon reduces risk and undergoes a significant amount of training and education in addition to what is required to attain their degrees.

Board certified surgeons are considered experts in their field, so when making your decision about who to trust with facial surgery, ensuring he or she is board-certified should be at the top of your checklist.

#1 Board-Certified Surgeons Reduce Risk

Offices of doctors that are board-certified take special care to make sure everything is as safe as possible. Spaces are cleaner, techniques are smoother, and every possible precaution is taken to make sure the patient is both healthy and safe throughout the duration of their stay.

#2 Board-Certified Surgeons Provide Enhanced Results

Board-certified doctors strive for the best possible results, and their extensive training prepares them to deliver the look you desire. As a triple board-certified surgeon, it is Dr. Mark Ginsburg’s job to ensure that he uses everything within his span of knowledge and training to ensure his patients receive the best possible preparation and post-procedure care.

#3 Board-Certified Surgeons Run Reliable Offices

Not only are the doctors more reliable, but their offices are too. Board-certification means the doctor excels in every area of their practice, including office management. Our offices strive to keep the patient relaxed and comfortable from the moment they walk through the door.

#4 Board-Certified Surgeons Adhere to High Ethical Standards

Board-certified doctors need to keep their ethical standing safe, and that means they are liable for any misfortune that may come to a patient during a procedure. Board-certification serves as a warranty for you should anything go wrong, the likeliness of which is drastically reduced by their qualifications.

#5 Board-Certified Surgeons Undergo Extensive Experience & Training

The requirements for becoming board-certified include 16 years of college level education and training, which includes internships and residencies. During which several examinations must be passed prior to even applying for a certification. To keep their certification doctors are required to maintain education requirements.

Patients of Providence Facial Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery will be happy to find that our offices are not only welcoming and happy to have you but that Dr. Ginsburg is triple board-certified in facial plastic surgery by The American Osteopathic Board of Otolaryngology and the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. His experience in his field is quite prestigious after having graduated in the top 10 percent of his class and receiving the Patrick Murray Award during his residency for being one of the top three scorers in the residency in-service exam. Top Three Facial Procedures for Men

Facial surgery for men is becoming increasingly popular. Our office wants to be sure that our clients not only understand the safety of these anti-aging procedures but that they feel comfortable speaking to our staff about how these facial cosmetic procedures can help improve their life.

#1 Eyelid Rejuvenation (Blepharoplasty)

Medically referred to as blepharoplasty, eyelid rejuvenation is one of the most popular facial procedures among men today. Blepharoplasty can be used to help get rid of excess skin or fat around the eyes or smooth out signs of aging. Scars or incision marks are hidden behind the skin and will not be visible post-surgery. Eyelid surgery can be performed as an outpatient procedure, and patients report very low levels of pain or discomfort afterward.

#2 Neck Lifts

While also very popular amongst women, this procedure (otherwise known as a lower rhytidectomy) has significant cosmetic benefits, as well as medical benefits. Typically used to correct what is commonly referred to as “turkey neck,” or “double chin,” this sagging skin can damage jaw muscles by weakening them. By removing it, we are not only tightening the neck of your skin for a more youthful and healthier appearance, but we are helping the jaw muscles to strengthen and regain their definition.

#3 Nose Surgery

Nose surgery (rhinoplasty) is probably one of the first types of procedures that come to mind when people discuss plastic surgery. Like neck lifts, this procedure can be used for medical purposes just as much as it can be used for cosmetic purposes. If you have a broken nose, difficulties breathing, or if you’re in need of nostril repair, all of this can be done with the nose surgery offered by our office. Scarring is limited to the inside of the nose, so there won’t be anything visible post-surgery and this procedure only requires a few weeks of recovery time.

If you have any more questions about the procedures listed, or what else our offices offer, contact us today.

Five Tips for Managing Dry Skin

Providence Facial Plastic Surgery#1 Always Get Your Skin Care Products from a Licensed Medical Professional

Now, this might seem a bit excessive, after all, there are plenty of products on the shelves of your local grocery store that promise to smooth your skin in no time. As great as that may sound, medical professionals are trained to match the best possible product to your unique skin type. Our offices provide Obagi® Skin Care Products that can’t be found in your local market and are prescription strength.

#2 Use Cream Instead of a Lotion

Lotions tend to be too thick for the skin to actually absorb and like most other products on the market are made with chemicals that can sometimes do more harm than good to your face. The creams and ointments of the Obagi® Skin Care Product line provide are designed to be easily absorbed by the skin by cleaning out clogged pores and helping to peel away dead skin. Skin hydration has never felt better!

#3 Be Careful of How Much Hot Water You Expose Your Skin Too

In a world where steam is advertised as healthy for the skin, this message can come off as a bit misleading. There is a certain amount of heat that is good for the skin, but if it is too high and on for too long, this can become dangerous for your face. The saying “too much of a good thing” heavily applies here. It’s better to take warmer showers rather than hot showers that only last for about ten minutes.

#4 Apply Your Skin Care Products Immediately After Washing

Anyone who has used dermatological products before should be familiar with the saying “apply to clean skin” that is usually labeled on the back of bottles. The same method applies to Obagi® products. For the best possible results, you should apply your Obagi® cream or ointment to your skin after a nice warm shower when the pores are most open, and the skin can absorb the product most easily.

#5 Always Wear Lip Balm

Not only is it good for your lips, but it is also good for the skin around your lips. When your lips are chapped, they dry out the area around them as well, making you more susceptible to marionette lines and wrinkles in the future.

If you are in need of any more tips about Obagi® products and skin care, contact our offices today.

Forehead Creases Treatment Using BOTOX® Cosmetic Compared to Brow Lift

Patients can appear haggard or worn down when the skin on their faces begins to sag and forms wrinkles and creases. Dr. Mark Ginsburg provides cosmetic treatments that can transform a tired appearance into a refreshed one. Many patients come for treatment because they are tired of looking older than they actually feel. Looking older can negatively impact one’s life in a number of areas, from work to social life. A cosmetic procedure can restore a more youthful appearance, as well as one’s self-esteem.

A brow lift is a common procedure because the forehead is usually the first area to show visible signs of aging. A brow lift can be used to raise the brow line and smooth skin in the area. Although this treatment is popular, treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic is just as popular. This treatment is very effective in softening and eliminating fine lines and wrinkles, leading to a younger appearance. Dr. Ginsburg is available for consultation to help you understand the benefits of BOTOX® Cosmetic versus a brow lift.

BOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX® Cosmetic is quite popular with patients, probably because it is so accessible. This non-surgical procedure is considered to be very safe and affordable for almost any patient. BOTOX® Cosmetic involves an injection that will temporarily paralyze certain facial muscles that create creases and wrinkles. BOTOX® Cosmetic basically disables certain facial muscles so that your skin appears relaxed and smooth. This treatment works on the upper facial features and leads to a noticeable improvement in the appearance of the forehead and eye region. This leads to a younger and more refreshed appearance for the patient.

One minor drawback of the procedure is the fact that it is temporary. Although treatment results are significant, they only last from four to six months. At this time, treatment should be repeated if the patient expects to maintain the benefits of the treatment. Patients should also be aware that BOTOX® does not address loose skin — only wrinkles, lines, and creases.

Brow Lifts

The most significant benefit of brow lift surgery is that it offers long-lasting results to the patient. Brow lifts eliminate wrinkles and lines, leading to a more youthful appearance for the face. It not only helps with wrinkles, but also raises the brow line and does away with loose facial skin. Patients who have significant signs of aging because of a low brow may find a brow lift better suited and more effective than BOTOX® Cosmetic. The main negative of a brow lift is that it costs more and is more invasive. Although any surgical procedure involves risk, we reduce that risk by performing an endoscopic brow lift. This procedure is less risky because it only involves small incisions that heal more quickly, reducing recovery time.

If you are dealing with noticeable signs of aging, you should consider cosmetic treatment. Dr. Mark Ginsburg provides safe and effective treatment in a caring and professional setting. If you want more information on BOTOX® Cosmetic or other cosmetic procedures, make an appointment with us right away. We eagerly await hearing from you!

Facelift Results: What to Expect

As advances in facelift technologies and techniques have been made, the stigma that used to be attached to those who had the procedure has vanished. This is particularly true when the procedure is performed by an expert board-certified facial plastic surgeon and cosmetic surgeon such as Dr. Mark Ginsburg. Facelift surgery has become accepted by society as a way to revitalize one’s face. It has become as mainstream as applying anti-wrinkle cream at night or wearing makeup. While facelifts once left patients with an unnatural, stretched appearance, today’s facelifts enhance the patient’s natural looks, allowing them to look and feel younger without any obvious signs of plastic surgery.

A facelift is a cosmetic surgery procedure that offers the patient the opportunity to “turn back the clock” and enjoy a more youthful facial appearance. A number of surgical techniques can be employed. It normally involves removing extra skin and can be combined with other facial procedures under anesthesia. Facelifts are the sixth most commonly performed cosmetic procedure, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Providence Facial Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery offers facelifts that consistently look natural and beautiful, regardless of the procedure employed. Dr. Ginsburg has mastered a number of facelift techniques. He is also an expert at tailoring the appropriate technique to meet the individual needs of each unique patient. No matter what your goals are, Dr. Ginsburg can offer you the results you desire.

Forming Realistic Expectations

Probably the most important part of ensuring satisfaction with the results of your procedure is establishing expectations that are realistic for a given procedure. For example, even the greatest plastic surgeon cannot make a patient who is 45-years old look like a 21-year old. It is just not possible. Although a patient may have a perfect procedure, if he or she has unrealistic expectations, they will be disappointed at even these results.

Facelifts can make the face look younger by about one decade. People who get this procedure who expect results along these lines are usually quite pleased with their results. Those with only mild facial sagging often have a mini facelift that offers excellent results that are less invasive. Dr. Ginsburg tailors each facelift to suit the individual needs of each patient.

Realizing the Role Patients Play in Their Recovery

Dr. Ginsburg spends quite a bit of time helping patients understand the role they play in their recovery. Although the results of a facelift are immediately apparent, the healing process occurs over the span of a few months, rather than weeks. This can frustrate the patient, but they need to follow Dr. Ginsburg’s exact post-operative instructions to ensure they heal properly and obtain the best results. Smokers are required to stop smoking, and vigorous activities should be avoided until Dr. Ginsburg gives the okay.

Healthy Lifestyle Commitment

Although time is a major factor in the aging of the skin, an individual’s lifestyle choices also play a large role. Those who were smokers, worshipped the sun, did not get enough sleep, drank excessive amounts of alcohol, did not regularly exercise, or engaged in other unhealthy habits before their facelift procedure must change their lifestyles after their surgery to ensure that their results are maintained. Otherwise, they may experience additional signs of aging on their faces, reversing the benefits of their procedure.

What to Expect Before Your Rhinoplasty Surgery: Pre-Operative Instructions

Rhinoplasty is a procedure that can have a dramatic effect on your appearance. The procedure involves changing the size or shape of one of the most noticeable features of the face, the nose. People undergo this surgery for a variety of reasons. Some people want to correct congenital abnormalities, fix an injury or want to have a nose that better suits the other features of their face. Dr. Mark Ginsburg is a board-certified facial plastic and cosmetic surgeon that specializes in cosmetic rhinoplasty. Dr. Ginsburg is known for giving patients superior results that leave them pleased with their outcome.

As a patient of Dr. Ginsburg, you can expect the highest level of care in his state-of-the-art office. While Dr. Ginsburg delivers the best care possible, it is important for patients to follow the pre- and post-operative care instructions they are given. During the consultation with the doctor, patients are given pre-op rhinoplasty instructions so they will understand what they should expect prior to the surgery. Dr. Ginsburg can determine whether the person is a good candidate for the procedure by their willingness to follow these important instructions.

If a rhinoplasty is in your future, we encourage you to read the following pre-operative instructions. These instructions will help you gain an understanding of what to expect at your consultation with Dr. Ginsburg. It is important that you take these instructions seriously. You will need to live a healthy life prior to, and after, your surgery. To achieve the best results, it is important that you follow your post-operative instructions.

General Pre-Surgical Rhinoplasty Instructions

After you have made the decision to undergo a rhinoplasty, you will receive your pre-operative instructions. At your consultation, Dr. Ginsburg will discuss the instructions with you and answer any questions you may have about the instructions and the procedure. Your pre-operative instructions may advise you of the following:

  • Two weeks before your surgery, stop using blood-thinning medications, vitamin E, aspirin, or ibuprofen.
  • Have someone available who can drive you to and from the office on the day of the procedure.
  • Have any prescriptions that are prescribed by the doctor filled before the rhinoplasty.
  • It is important that you do not eat or drink after midnight on the day your procedure is scheduled.
  • Do not wear make-up on the day your procedure is scheduled.
  • Have someone to provide care for you for at least two days following the surgery.
  • Quit smoking for two weeks before the surgery. You should also not smoke during your recovery process. Smoking can have a untoward  effect on the healing process.
  • Wear comfortable clothing, preferably something that fastens in the front, on the day of the rhinoplasty.
  • Do not wear jewelry, contact lenses and remove any piercings on the day of the procedure.

It is important that you are well-prepared for the healing process of your rhinoplasty. Being prepared will help to ensure that you have a smooth healing period. You should have all of the supplies you need, such as cold compresses, saline nasal spray, cotton pads and any other items recommended by Dr. Ginsburg, purchased before the operation. Make sure that you confirm all of your follow-up appointments before the surgery, as well.

Eliminating Under-Eye Bags With Lower Eyelid Surgery

Bags underneath the eyes are a stereotypical sign of tiredness. Seeing wrinkled or puffy skin beneath a person’s eyes can cause others to draw unfair and inaccurate conclusions about the individual’s age, mood or even physical health. However, in many instances, bags under the eyes are a genetic issue or a result of basic aging. Although baggy eyes may seem unavoidable, selecting the appropriate treatment at our facial plastic surgery center in the Philadelphia area can present an effective, practical and long-term solution.

Lower eyelid surgery can help patients obtain tighter, smoother and younger-looking under-eye skin that makes them look more energetic and vibrant. Whether it’s used on its own or alongside other treatments, lower eyelid surgery is an effective and safe method for revitalizing your appearance. If you think that such a treatment would benefit you, you should consider the following:

What Causes Under-eye Bags?

Under-eye bags are, in many cases, a temporary physiological reaction to sleep deprivation, allergies, diet issues or numerous other factors. In most of these situations, individuals don’t give their bodies the time or resources necessary to support proper fluid circulation. This causes subcutaneous water retention, which most often makes itself noticeable under the eyes. Because they’re temporary, under-eye bags caused by these issues cannot be addressed with lower eyelid surgery.

However, under-eye bags that are a result of aging can be treated with the surgery. As people become older, skin naturally loses its elasticity, and collagen and fat become separated from muscle tissue. This leads to droopy-looking eyes that may also be puffy. This commonly occurs in older men and women, but some individuals will be effected due to genetic influences. Unfortunately, under-eye aging can make you look fatigued even when you’re well rested, and it can cause you to appear older than your actual age. Lower eyelid surgery is a suitable option for many people looking to minimize this effect on their looks.

How Can Eyelid Surgery Help?

The goal of eyelid surgery is to eliminate unwanted skin and fat beneath and above the contours of the eyes, and in some cases, it also involves tightening of the muscle tissue. Removing excess tissue and tightening the skin that is left can often help keep patients from appearing tired and old around their eye region. Lower eyelid surgery is especially helpful for minimizing age-induced puffing and sagging underneath the eyes. After a quick and safe recovery, you may notice results right away, allowing you to return to work within one to two weeks while feeling confident.

How Long Do the Results Last?

Eyelid surgery provides results that can last for several years. Because tissue is removed directly from the area, and the eyelids are left rejuvenated and redefined, patients don’t need to be concerned with their results fading in the near future. Indeed, it’s very common for patients to enjoy their results for around 10 years before the benefits begin fading. While all patients have their unique goals, it’s essential to be aware that no surgery is capable of halting the natural aging process. Because of this, the results of your surgery will most likely fade over time depending on your unique genetics and situation.

Candidates for Lower Eyelid Surgery

Patients who struggle with persistent bags underneath their eyes from normal aging are typically ideal lower eyelid surgery candidates. As long as the changes they want are purely aesthetic, and the effects aren’t from an underlying health problem, facial plastic surgery provides an effective method for achieving a younger, healthier look.

As with all surgeries, in order to qualify for eyelid surgery, patients must be in good overall health. Ailments that can hinder your ability to heal properly, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes or liver disease, can increase certain risks during and after surgery. Smokers tend to have a slightly suppressed immune system, so we recommend that if you smoke, you abstain from doing so for the several weeks prior to and following your surgery. Certain eye problems, such as glaucoma, infection or chronic severe dry-eye can also disqualify you from eyelid surgery.

To learn whether you’re an ideal candidate for eyelid surgery, please contact Dr. Mark Ginsburg to schedule your private consultation. He will help you make the most informed decision possible by establishing your goals and understanding the precise issues that could impact your results.
