How is a Breast Augmentation Performed?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure intended to improve the size, shape, and appearance of your breasts. At your initial complimentary consultation, we review a number of options for surgery including the desired size and shape of the breasts, a choice of silicone or saline implants, and the placement of the implants.

Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

There are a variety of factors that contribute to an individual’s candidacy for breast augmentation. If your breasts are naturally small, uneven in size, or have lost volume as a result of pregnancy, you could be a good candidate for this procedure. Of course, it is also important that you are in good physical health, with reasonable expectations for the results and a healthy level of self-confidence.

During your consultation, Dr. Ginsburg will speak with you specifically regarding your concerns and goals, so as to determine whether or not a breast augmentation will help you achieve the body you desire.

Saline vs. Silicone Implants

One of the biggest choices an individual must make on the road to breast augmentation is with regard to the material of her implants. When it comes to the choice between silicone and saline, many patients prefer silicone implants due to their more natural feel. Dr. Ginsburg can help you determine which material will be best suited to your individual needs, so that you can have confidence in the outcome of your procedure.

How to Choose the Best Size

Once you have determined the type of implant, the next major choice is size. This can be a challenge for many patients. After years of wishing for larger breasts, now is the time to finally determine what size will make sense for you. Body frame is an important factor to consider, as the implant size is in part determined by what the structure of your body will allow.

It may also be helpful to find photographs of those with a breast size you feel would look best. With the help of a sizing bra, you can get a better understanding of what your hypothetical size looks like in reality. During this process, Dr. Ginsburg will provide his professional opinion on sizing, based on his years of experience performing breast augmentation surgeries.

How is a Breast Augmentation Performed?

Each patient’s surgery will be tailored to their individualized treatment plan. During the procedure, Dr. Ginsburg will make small incisions hidden at the nipple or in the natural crease under the breast. The placement of the implant will either be on top of or under the chest muscle, depending on the needs of the patient. The pros and cons to each placement will be discussed in detail during your consultation. Regardless of where the implant is placed, Dr. Ginsburg will ensure that the breasts look as natural and symmetrical as possible. Patients are under general anesthesia for the duration of the surgery and will go home the same day of their procedure.

How Much Do Breast Implants Cost in Philadelphia?

The average cost of a breast augmentation is $3,000 – $6,500. The exact cost varies depending on the size of the implants and if other surgeries are performed in conjunction with your breast augmentation. Please view our patient financing page for further details.

What Happens During Breast Augmentation Recovery?

The average recovery time of a breast augmentation is 2-3 weeks. Although Dr. Ginsburg does his best to minimize pain, many patients will still feel discomfort and require pain medication during their recovery. Typical pain after breast surgery is described as burning and tightness in the chest and arms. It is important to make sure any pain prescriptions are filled and ready before your procedure, so you will have them when you arrive home.

You will be expected to wear a special supportive bra during recovery, and many patients take approximately one week off work or school to give the body proper time to rest. It will also be necessary to sleep on your back for two to four weeks after surgery, so as to avoid placing unnecessary strain on the breasts.

How Soon Can I Return to Normal Activity?

Many of our patients are eager to get back to their daily routines. However, it is important to follow your post-operative instructions carefully, which includes giving the body plenty of time to recover. While you may feel comfortable enough to return to work or school after a week, the entire healing process will take several months, and will require you to incorporate movement and exercise slowly for the best results.
