What is Otoplasty in Philadelphia?

Ear Surgery in Philadelphia, PAWith so many common names for cosmetic procedures circling around, it’s hard to recognize most by their medical name. Otoplasty, for example, may be better recognized as Ear Surgery. But what exactly is Otoplasty? And what can it be used for? Our office would like to help you better understand so that you may know all your options in moving toward a happier, more confident self.

Otoplasty was developed for the concern many patients have with protruding ears. Patients with ears that are not proportional to the rest of their head can often feel self-conscious about their ears appearing to “stick out” or make the rest of their face look off. Our office resolves this for them by sculpting the cartilage into a shape and appearance that better suits their features and facial proportions.

How Otoplasty Is Performed

It is an outpatient procedure during which the patient will be unconscious. Small incisions are made behind the ears to avoid scarring and provide the most aesthetically pleasing results as possible. Depending on the patient, the earlobes may also be reconstructed during this time to allow the ears to be closer to the head.

Otoplasty Recovery

Recovery typically lasts for one week, and during this time you will be provided with several instructions to ensure the best care. You will be required to wear a headband during this time to keep the ears protected during their healing process.

Otoplasty Benefits

Otoplasty can be used to correct a variety of deformities in the ears, and while the benefits are mostly cosmetic, or aesthetic, they can also become emotional. Self-confidence is key to a happy life, and it is no small thing to consider. Being constantly self-conscious of one’s appearance can take a heavy emotional toll on people and can become exhausting after a while. Otoplasty can be used to rejuvenate that self-confidence and allow patients to feel normal again.

This procedure can be performed on people of all ages to help the ears grow in normally, or be corrected after a certain amount of time.
